MYP4 Daily Trip to Venice Lagoon – April 20 2000 1288 School Office

Dear MYP4 Parents,

An engaging field experience awaits our students in the unique ecosystem of the Venetian Lagoon, where science, observation, and environmental awareness come together in an authentic outdoor learning context.

At Lazzaretto Nuovo, along the Sentiero delle Barene, students will explore one of the most distinctive natural habitats of the lagoon. Guided by expert educators, they will investigate the fragile balance of this ecosystem, observing firsthand the effects of environmental factors such as erosion caused by boat traffic and the adaptations of plant and animal life to saline conditions.

Through direct observation and guided inquiry, students will deepen their understanding of key scientific concepts connected to their current units of study, including the role of halophytic plants in transforming CO₂ into organic matter and the biodiversity of bird species inhabiting the lagoon. This immersive experience will also support the development of scientific thinking, encouraging students to ask questions, record observations, and interpret natural phenomena in context.

The visit will take place along a circular walking path of approximately 1 km. Students will be divided into two groups and supported by two guides, with structured moments of explanation at the beginning and midway through the activity. A portion of the route will be completed independently, allowing students to engage more directly with their surroundings using an observation notebook.

This experience offers a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with the real world, fostering environmental responsibility, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation of the natural environment.
