Memorable lab experiences with Roncade primary public school
Our DP1 students, Vira Plyeshkova and Michelle Bon, spearheaded the organization of an amazing experience for public schools in the community of Roncade.
With the help of our chemistry teacher, Mr Pitarresi, the project provided a learning opportunity for children to delve into the magic of science. By offering two lab experiences, one for biology and one for chemistry, Vira and Michelle created a hands-on experience that was fun and innovative, where for the chemistry laboratory, they came up with an experiment with red cabbage indicator and different solutions, with which the children could observe the change in colors when putting the indicator in, indicating if the solution was neutral, acidic, or basic. Meanwhile, in their biology lab, the microscopes were used to allow the children to observe different parts of plants.
A presentation about this initiative, known as “Eco-school,” was also given to raise awareness on recycling, water scarcity, and food waste among the students.
Vira’s reflection on her learning:
“It was very useful organizing this project, because we learned a lot of things through the process, from drafting the experience to putting it in action in front of the kids. It was our first time having to follow 20 kids, being the leaders of the whole process. From explaining the experiment to them, keeping track of time, and at the same time communicating with the volunteers who were present, helping with the organization. We will also remember it as a very fun time that we had, looking at the happy faces of the kids, realizing that it was very successful because the kids left very satisfied!”
H-IS Lab Experience with PYP5 students
During a recent hands-on lab experience, our PYP5 students explored the fascinating world of fire and candles in an engaging and educational experiment. Guided by DP1 volunteers Vira Plyeshkova and Michelle Bon, the young investigators had the opportunity to observe and experiment, learning through direct experience rather than textbooks. It was a meaningful moment of cross-grade collaboration that sparked curiosity and scientific thinking.
Organized by H-FARM chemistry teacher, Mr Pitarresi, the activities included experimenting with different materials, shrouding in mystery, and bursting with discovery.
Vira enthusiastically declared their mission: to pass on the scientific torch, sharing the very wonders that had captivated them in their own early explorations. They wanted to guide the younger students around the laboratory, their favourite place at school. The ultimate goal was to share with the younger pupils the beauty of science and experiments, a spark that could ignite a lifelong love for the fascinating universe of science!
