Reading just 20 minutes a day might not seem like much, but over the course of a year, it adds up to over 1.8 million words! This daily habit builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, and nurtures imagination, whether your child is reading in English or their home language.

Keeping up a reading routine over the summer helps prevent a summer dip, and ensures your child returns to school confident, curious, and ready to learn in the next academic year.

Choosing a book? Look for stories that match your child’s interests and reading level. A good rule of thumb, (or hand): if there are more than five tricky words on a page, it might be too challenging to read independently, but perfect for reading together! Don’t forget: graphic novels, audiobooks, poetry, and nonfiction all count as reading.

The most important thing? Make it joyful. Let your child choose, talk about stories together, and model reading as a lifelong pleasure, not a chore.

If you need any further support, please reach out to your Homeroom teacher. Happy reading!
